The Kerala backwaters are a network of lagoons, lakes and canals that run parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, and a houseboat cruise through them is one of the calmest ways to see South India.
When to go
October to March is the most comfortable window — the monsoon has cleared and daytime temperatures stay pleasant. April to June is hotter but quieter and cheaper.
Where to start
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the classic starting point for a houseboat, while Kumarakom suits travellers who want a resort base with shorter backwater excursions.
What to pack
Light cottons, a hat, mosquito repellent and a power bank — most houseboats run on generators overnight.
